SC Law Enforcement Training

It is the intent of the General Assembly in creating a facility and a governing council to maximize training opportunities for law enforcement officers and criminal justice personnel, to coordinate training, and to set standards for the law enforcement and criminal justice service, all which are imperative to upgrading law enforcement to a professional status.

The South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy is governed by the South Carolina Training Council. The Council consists of eleven members. The governor appoints six council members who serve at will. The other five come from specified law enforcement organizations. The council meets no less than four times a year. Council members serve without compensation.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Training Council consists of the following eleven members: 

  • The Attorney General of South Carolina.
  • The Chief of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.
  • The Director of the South Carolina Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon Services.
  • The Director of the South Carolina Department of Corrections.
  • The Director of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources.
  • The Director of the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.
  • One chief of police from a municipality having a population of less than ten thousand. This person must be appointed by the Governor and shall serve at his pleasure.
  • One chief of police from a municipality having a population of more than ten thousand. This person must be appointed by the Governor and shall serve at his pleasure.
  • One county sheriff from a county with a population of less than fifty thousand. This person must be appointed by the Governor and shall serve at his pleasure.
  • One county sheriff from a county with a population of more than fifty thousand. This person must be appointed by the Governor and shall serve at his pleasure.
  • One detention director who is responsible for the operation and management of a county or multi-jurisdictional jail. This person must be appointed by the Governor and shall serve at his pleasure.
